Clay County Fairgrounds Serve as Host to Summer Livestock Shows and Events

SPENCER, IOWA- This summer the Clay County Fairgrounds will serve as a multi-use facility when they host state and regional livestock shows.

The first event kicking things off is the District 4 Holstein Show, held June 9-12. The event is hosted annually and is organized by the Iowa Holstein Association. Two shows are being held, the Holstein junior show and the Holstein open show. The junior show started at 8 a.m. on Wednesday morning while the open show is set to start at 9 a.m. on Thursday. Show organizers expected approximately 140 head of cattle from across the state of Iowa to come in for the show.

The District 4 Holstein Show is only open to Iowa owned cattle and members of the Iowa Holstein Association. The junior show is for youth between the ages of 10 and 21. In addition to the judging of the cattle, there is also a contest of showmanship for the junior participants. Thursday afternoon will wrap-up the events, with a final championship competition.

Next week, the grounds will welcome the North Central Regional Simmental Show which runs Tuesday, June 17 through Saturday, June 21. This event is open to American Junior Simmental Association members. In addition to the cattle being judged, other events are held for junior members to participate in. Attendees will be able to take part in a judging contest, cattlemen’s quiz, sales talk, public speaking contest, and showmanship. Cattle will be exhibited on Friday at 8 a.m. with a showmanship contest to follow on Saturday at 8:30 a.m.

Along with other livestock shows, the fairgrounds will be host to add events. This weekend the fairgrounds and events center will provide space for the KICD Tractor Ride. The Grandstands will also have races throughout the summer following up to the fair. The first race is scheduled for Tuesday, June 17.

Horse shows will be held later in the summer hosted by the Missouri River Valley Appaloosa Club and the Conquistadors.  In addition the grounds will host 4-H Achievement Days, the 4th of July Celebration, and other various livestock sales and weigh-ins.

The community is welcome to attend any event and is encouraged to show livestock exhibitors their support.
